In a continual effort to clean up Panama, no stone has been left un-turned. Many citizens of Panama are applauding the latest Ministry of Public Works (MOP) initiative to reduce the amount of illegal billboards in Panama.
There are over 9000 illegal signs in the country which have proven to be an extremely lucrative industry for the Municipality and this latest movement will definitely make a dent in the municipal pocket book. The orders were issued in mid Janauary by the MOP giving the bill board owners 90 days to remove their signs.
The Fines of up to $100 000 will be issued if they are not removed and demolished by the middle of April. The MOP Minister Federico Jose Suarez was quoted “a census conducted in late 2008 identified 8,800 illegal billboards in the country, and he intends to reduce visual pollution”.
