The Tropical Flu

Who gave this to me? Where did it come from? Why won’t it go away? Grrrrrr. As some of you may be experiencing and as some of you are witnessing, this latest virus is a doozy, just a doozy as my Mom used to say.

It is a overall feeling of yuck! Congestion, loss of appetitie, fever, aches and pains and then the cough. It is the cough that won’t leave. It doesn’t matter how nicely you tell it that it is no longer welcome it is the cough that will find you hanging on to this thing for what feels like forever.

There is only so much Tylenol cold and cough syrup you can take before you start to wonder what all those chemicals are going to do to you. Five days after Allan got sick and I started to feel the early symptoms I thought there is no way I am going to be popping pills and quils. I took my flu to google. Ginger, lemon grass, garlic, lemons, a teaspoon of honey and hot water make one of the best cough and cold remedies. I had all of those things and so I started boiling and simmering. Ginger is known as the #1 natural cough remedy you can find. One lemon has more vitamin C than 3 oranges, garlic well that is to keep the witches away and is just a wonder spice, and hot water is the best way to drink your liquids when you are sick.

This is what happened. We were finally able to sleep, as the ginger helped our coughs. I was able to warn off the fevers, chills and aches and pains and only contracted the cough. Lots of fluids, a cup of my natural concoction and a lot of sleep and we are on the mend.

Living in a warm climate has definitely found us a lot healthier and no longer do we get those nasty winter colds. This is the first bit of significant down time we have had in 2 years. However like anything else, a virus is a virus and unfortunately it seems they are much stronger down here in the hot humid climates. Take care of yourself, stay away from the alcohol, drink plenty of liquids and lets all kick this flu out of Panama.
